ISO 9001:2026 – what businesses need to know

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026, replacing ISO 9001:2015 as the current edition of the standard. 30 September 2029 has been set as the deadline for certified clients to transition, providing approximately three years to prepare and make the necessary updates.

For organisations already certified to ISO 9001:2015, this is not a complete rebuild of the quality management system. The revised standard retains the familiar framework, with targeted additions and clearer wording rather than fundamental change. The emphasis is on strengthening existing arrangements and keeping them relevant to how organisations operate today.

One of the main changes is an explicit focus on quality culture and ethical behaviour. Top management is required to promote both, and people working under the organisation's control must be aware of them. In practical terms, this means looking beyond written policies to how quality and ethical behaviour are reflected in everyday decisions, practices and actions.

The revised standard also makes a clearer distinction between risks and opportunities. Organisations need to analyse and evaluate both potential problems and opportunities to improve their ability to deliver conforming products and services and enhance customer satisfaction. The emphasis is on planning appropriate actions, integrating them into existing processes and checking whether they are effective.

ISO 9001:2026 strengthens the existing requirements for planning and managing change. Alongside considering the purpose, potential consequences, resources and responsibilities, organisations must consider how changes will be communicated, how their effectiveness will be monitored and evaluated, and how the results will be reviewed. This supports a more deliberate approach to maintaining an effective quality management system during change.

There is also clearer wording around interested parties. Organisations must identify relevant interested parties and their requirements, and determine which requirements will be addressed through the quality management system. Management review must also consider changes in relevant interested parties' needs and expectations.

Other updates include an explicit requirement to define objectives for each internal audit, clearer terminology and expanded explanatory guidance. Overall, the revision is best seen as a modernisation and strengthening exercise, rather than a radical rewrite.

For certified clients, we recommend starting with a gap review against the 2026 edition, identifying any necessary actions and planning transition alongside existing audit arrangements. There is no need to rush into an immediate overhaul. A planned, proportionate approach will help you build on what already works.
